Where it all began
Saorsa Athens opened its doors in July 2017, founded by three sisters who shared a vision of creating a space that celebrates freedom, art, and human connection.
The story of Saorsa began years earlier, in 2013, when one of the sisters attended a small theatrical play called That’s Life in what was then a long-abandoned building. The play—raw, intimate, and deeply moving—was an autobiographical performance by Vice Versa, an amateur immigrant theater group. Their stories of displacement, resilience, and belonging resonated powerfully, planting the first seed of what would later become Saorsa Athens.
Saorsa Athens
The name Saorsa, meaning “freedom” in Scottish Gaelic, captures the spirit of that moment and the mission that followed: to offer a space where creativity is unbound, voices are heard, and diverse experiences can find expression.
From its beginning, Saorsa Athens has been more than a venue—it’s been a living, breathing hub of cultural exchange. It brings together artists, performers, thinkers, and dreamers from across disciplines and backgrounds. Exhibitions, performances, book readings, and workshops unfold within its walls, each shaped by the belief that art thrives when community and authenticity lead the way.
What once was an abandoned shell has become a place where stories meet, ideas collide, and art takes on new forms. Saorsa Athens continues to evolve, grounded in the same impulse that started it all—the transformative power of shared creativity and the freedom to simply be.
